Our Plan

The environemntal dilema we are currently facing in our school community is the air quality, or poulltion. Our school is harshly affected by idling and the amount of carbon dioxide being released by vechiles. We want to reduce the amount of idiling in our school, as well as analyzing the air quality in our downtown Jersey City community. By identifying Lichen specimen, to determine the air quality in our area. Our final plan is to actually purify the enviorment by creating our own homemade air filters.

Lichens are at         P.S. 5 !!!

Lichens are a hybrid plant specis of fungus and moss ;they help indicate  how good the air quality is in enviornemnt found in.

When we began our project, we performed background research and came to a realization that, a certain plant specimen known as Lichen work as an indicator of air quality.

Lichen can be found on tree bark and different types old plants, or even stone. The more lichen in your environment means the air quality is moderate or good.

Each type of lichen indicates something different. For example leafy lichens means that you have moderate air but not the best.

Lichens are air quality indicators that lasts all year long. These plant speciment don't die out from weather and they learned to adapt to different amount of pollutions. These plant specimen arent posionous at all and the more you have on your tree the better. Your air affects these lichens by size, shape, and color. These organisms are a safe way to learn all about your air. They not only grow on tree bark but they can grow on rocks and stone. Lichens can be very hard to spot because people confuse them for moss. Lichens change overtinme to match with your air quality.

The team went outside of their building after school to examine the types of lichens that are growing in our community. In our area we had lichens known as flavoparmelia caperata and physica millegrana.

            Reducing our

          Carbon Footprints

With all the information and data gathered we were inspired to create a video

We created brochures , flyers and , posters to get people actively involved in our no idoling campaign. The Air Frehsheners since then have become well known to the ps 5 community.

Air Matter  Experiment

To start our experiment we did a simple experiemnt involving vaseline and plastic cups .Each cup had a thin layer of vaseline and placed them in different locations in and out of the school. After three to four we recollected them and placed them under a microscope to examine the particles. We came to relization that they were black carbon.

The plastic cup experiemnt helped us determine where the most amount of carbon was being at our school

On some of the cups below we made it easier for the particulates to be visible, so we put food coloring.

The reason we did the experiemnt inside and outside of our building was to help us better analyze how polluted our air quality is
